To implement a successful anti-virus regime, you need to understand what a virus is, what the effects of them are, and how to counter them.
Viruses
Viruses are pieces of software designed and written to propagate themselves using any means that connect information and computers together (networks, e-mail and disks). Once they have been allowed to infect a network, they can spread rapidly – and damagingly, typically without user knowledge or intervention. They are now an unfortunate fact of life in the computer world, and are usually intended to corrupt or delete data, and/or to make computers crash. The overall cost of virus-related issues runs into billions of pounds per year.
Anti-virus programs provide a layer of security to protect computers from computer viruses thereby preventing computers from infection and any subsequent issues and associated costs.
Worms
A Worm is a program that can replicate itself in the same way as a virus. However, a worm does not require a host program and can replicate itself automatically whenever an application or the operating system transfers or copies files.
Trojan Horses
A Trojan horse is a program that pretends to be one thing (usually something benign, such as a computer game or utility) but does damage when it is run. A Trojan horse does not usually replicate itself as it typically relies upon users to spread the program through e-mail or file sharing programs.

Spyware
Spyware is a generic name for software code that, once in place on a computer, will gather potentially confidential information without the user’s knowledge. Over the Internet, spyware may be introduced into a computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to interested parties. At best, these may simply be advertisers where spyware (often known as ‘adware’) may be thought of as an irritant that severely reduces system performance. At worst (‘malware’) it may gather user IDs and passwords with potentially much more sinister intent, and is thus a cause for public concern about privacy on the Internet.
